Notice how, unlike in the case where the children go into the regular flow, none of the children which have already taken their places adjusts in any way to the presence of later siblings. In the regular flow formation the earlier children sink to the feet level of the biggest sibling on the row. Not here though, it their tops that are lined up. "Floating" is not a bad description! They float to the top. Even the siblings that have to drop down, float as high as possible. You can think of them as if they are boxy helium balloons.
